HRISTOS
TOLIS
// About
Hristos Tolis is an Athens-based filmmaker, director of photography, and photographer. Trained as a mechanical engineer at NTUA and holding a Master’s in Shipping from the University of Piraeus, he pivoted to the image in 2010 — drawn to the way light and landscape hold memory.
His documentary work has been commissioned by UNHCR (2021), IFRC (2018), and WWF (2019). As a photographer he is a long-time collaborator of LiFO and has staged several solo exhibitions, most notably A Game of Power — a sustained document of the Greek lignite mining landscape.
In 2023 the documentary A Voice in the Night (co-directed with Olga Laskaratou) premiered at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival and won the Cosmocinema Award at the London Greek Film Festival. That same year he directed the interdisciplinary performance The Legend of Kopakonan at the 5th Zadar Organ Festival in Croatia.

Andreas Laskaratos and The Mysteries of Kefalonia
2025Searching for a possible family connection to the poet Andreas Laskaratos, Olga Laskaratou uncovers the history of the island where she spent her childhood summers. Kefalonia — largely rebuilt after the 1953 earthquakes that levelled its buildings entirely — retains almost no trace of the people who once lived there and wrote one of the significant chapters of Greek history: the Unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece. Against this historical backdrop, and under British rule, Andreas Laskaratos published The Mysteries of Kefalonia — a work denouncing the representatives of the church and politics, and the position of women at the time. Both Laskaratos and his book were excommunicated, forcing him to live on the margins with his large family. The questions raised in that book return as questions today. Has anything changed?

Worship
2024How do we understand the cult film, and which films defined the term in the Greek context? Is cult something subjective? Objective? Or is it constructed by a fanatical group of believers? How is this blind devotion to a film cultivated, and what are the conditions for a film to be loved unconditionally? 'Worship' explores the cult phenomenon primarily through the Greek films Tsiou by Makis Papadimitratos, Matchbox by Yiannis Oikonomidis, Let the Women Wait by Stavros Tsiolis, and the Vietnam episode from Pantelis Voulgaris' All Roads Lead, gathering testimonies from filmmakers, crew members, journalists and artists — completing an enthusiastic journey through the presence of this misunderstood term in Greece.

A Voice in the Night
2023A film about radio today. Neither elegy nor wishful thinking — an analytical look at how the dominance of the playlist model radically changed the character of the medium, and with it the role of the radio producer and their relationship with listeners. Personalities from across the spectrum of Greek music speak on the subject.

The Switch
2019WWF Greece, in close collaboration with WWF Germany, WWF Bulgaria and WWF Poland, created the 'Just Transition for Eastern and Southern Europe' programme with the support of the European Climate Initiative and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. The initiative aims to identify concrete job-creation alternatives in coal-dependent economies in Greece, Bulgaria and Poland, mobilise the necessary funding tools, and build a living network of stakeholders — workers, local authorities, civil society, universities — to embed Just Transition as a core component of national and European policy. Within this programme, The Switch was produced to highlight the alternatives available to Western Macedonia, the energy heartland of Greece.

The Legend of Kopakonan
2023One of the most beautiful European legends with roots in Celtic and Norse mythology. From the narration of renowned Zadar actress and puppeteer Sanja Grgina, the most unusual characters gathered around Kopakonan — a sea woman from the Faroe Islands known as Selkie — emerge. The legend is told from the perspective of the history of Zadar, with a soundscape on the organ by Tea Kulaš in collaboration with cellist Joasia Cieślak, who plays the halldorophone — an innovative electric instrument named after its inventor, the Icelander Halldór Úlfarsson. The entire experience is complemented by the sounds of the Zadar Sea Organ and projection mapping by Hristos Tolis, who is also the director of the performance. Lighting design by Alexandros Politakis transforms the stage into an underwater temple, giving the audience the impression of wandering the flooded streets of lost Atlantis.
